Best man speeches

If you're looking for information on giving best man speeches then you're probably in the same place as many other men. After initially being honored to perform the role it suddenly dawns on you - you've got to give a best man speech on the big day!

First thing though is - don't panic. Once you understand what is expected of you and with a little bit of thought about the groom, you'll be armed with all the information you need to give a great speech.

Two key points are not to make the speech too long, and try not to offend anyone too badly. That means no swearing, mention of previous girlfriends or lovers, or anything else that will paint the groom in a bad light with the bride's family, his own family, or anyone else at the wedding.

Do make it funny though - that is expected of you and one of the measures of best man speeches is how funny the guests found them. The good news is that you don't need to be a professional comic to get the laughs - the guests will be on your side, they'll hopefully be enjoying themselves and a glass or two of wine or beer should have helped things too.

When talking about the groom think about what his interests are. Are their any funny stories you can recount? If the fact isn't quite funny enough you don't need to be completely honest - make it up a bit, but don't go overboard.

On the day try and find out what the venue is like to allow you to mentally prepare. If you haven't dropped the rind during the wedding then you've completed the hardest part of the day, so relax, enjoy yourself and when you get up to speak make sure you compliment the bride. After that get a great joke in to get the guests in the mood and then you should be warmed up and on your way.

Good luck!
